چکیده

Vegetation indices (VI ) play an important role in studies of global climate and biogeochemical cycles, and are also positively related to many biophysical parameters and satellite products, such as leaf area index (LAI), gross primary production (GPP), land surface water index (LSWI) and land surface temperature (LST). In this study we found that VI’s had strong relationships with some biophysical products, such as gross primary production, yet were less well correlated with biophysical structural parameters, such as leaf area index. The relationships between MODIS VI’s and biophysical field measured LAI showed poor correlation at semi-arid land and broadleaf forest land cover type whereas cropland showed stronger correlations than the other vegetation types. In addition, the relationship between the enhanced vegetation index (EVI)-LAI and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI)-LAI did not show significant differences. Comparisons of the relationships between the EVI and NDVI with tower-measured GPP from 11 flux towers in North America, showed that MODIS EVI had much stronger relationships with tower-GPP than did NDVI, and EVI was better correlated with the seasonal dynamics of GPP than was NDVI. In addition, there were no significant differences among the 1x1, 3x3 and 7x7 pixel sample sizes. The comparisons of VIs from the 3 MODIS products from which VI’s are generated (Standard VI (MOD13)), Nadir Adjusted Surface Reflectance (NBAR (MOD43)), and Surface Reflectance (MOD09)), showed that MODIS NBAR-EVI (MOD43) was best correlated with GPP compared with the other VI products. In addition, the MODIS VI – tower GPP relationships were 15

Exploring Simple Algorithms for Estimating Gross Primary Production in Forested Areas from Satellite Data

Algorithms that use remotely-sensed vegetation indices to estimate gross primary production (GPP), a key component of the global carbon cycle, have gained a lot of popularity in the past decade. Yet despite the amount of research on the topic, the most appropriate approach is still under debate. As an attempt to address this question, we compared the performance of different vegetation indices ...

Validating MODIS and Sentinel-2 NDVI Products at a Temperate Deciduous Forest Site Using Two Independent Ground-Based Sensors

Quantifying the accuracy of remote sensing products is a timely endeavor given the rapid increase in Earth observation missions. A validation site for Sentinel-2 products was hence established in central Germany. Automatic multispectral and hyperspectral sensor systems were installed in parallel with an existing eddy covariance flux tower, providing spectral information of the vegetation presen...

Characterization of Biophysical Vegetation - Soil Dynamics along an Eco-climatic Brazilian Transect with Modis Vegetation Indices

Field measurements were conducted on 10 June through 21 July 2002 to collect biophysical data in support of MODIS validation studies. Leaf Area Index (LAI), Plant Area Index (PAI), Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (fAPAR), biomass, cover components, site characterization and soil characterization were measured. The study areas extended over an eco-climatic transect, from the cerrado...

Modeling Gross Primary Production of an Evergreen Needleleaf Forest Using Modis and Climate Data

Forest canopies are composed of photosynthetically active vegetation (PAV, chloroplasts) and nonphotosynthetic vegetation (NPV, e.g., cell wall, vein, branch). The fraction of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) absorbed by the canopy (FAPAR) should be partitioned into FAPARPAV and FAPARNPV. Gross primary production (GPP) of forests is affected by FAPARPAV. In this study we developed and ...

Overview of the radiometric and biophysical performance of the MODIS vegetation indices

We evaluated the initial 12 months of vegetation index product availability from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board the Earth Observing System-Terra platform. Two MODIS vegetation indices (VI), the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and enhanced vegetation index (EVI), are produced at 1-km and 500-m resolutions and 16-day compositing periods. This pape...
